(UNDATED) - The wintery storm that slammed through Indiana yesterday brought with it the usual number of warnings about driving safely in ice and snow.

It has also brought a warning from a group of doctors warning of dangers posed by snow throwers.

With more snow on the way, physicians at the Indiana Hand-to-Shoulder Center are reminding Hoosiers of the dangers of using a snow thrower.

Doctor Thomas Kaplan says it only takes a split second for someone to lose a finger or finger tip.

Kaplan recalled the December blizzard of 2012 when six Central Indiana residents lost one or more finger tips or suffered severe cuts by trying to clear the chute with their hands.

Doctor Kaplan says it's really simple: to avoid injury, turn off the machine and never use your hand to clear the chute.
