(INDIANAPOLIS) - A criminal investigation has been launched after two private snow plow drivers were spotted loading up and stealing salt that was stacked on display outside a south Indianapolis grocery store.

RTV 6 reports that workers at the Kroger in the 4200 block of South East Street called Indianapolis police on Tuesday after they discovered 60 bags of Morton Safety Salt missing from several pallets displayed just outside the store entrance.

Police said workers reviewed their security cameras and found two snow plow drivers were responsible for the heist early Saturday morning when the store was closed.

Officers reviewed the tape and spotted a red truck and a white truck, each with snow plows attached, pulling up so that the drivers could heft the dozens of bags into their trucks.

A witness happened to write down the license numbers of each truck, and police said both were registered to the same man, who owns a large $371,000 home elsewhere on the south side near State Route 37 South Belmont Avenue and West Stop 11 Road.

Police now have the man's name, and Kroger managers told officers they would prosecute.

Store workers said the surveillance video was ready to be turned over to police as detectives gather evidence for criminal charges.

No arrests were immediately reported and a police report filed in the case does not indicate that police have yet contacted the suspected thieves.

Store workers said that each bag of safety salt was for sale at $5.89. The total value on the stolen goods was pegged at $353.40, which could mean felony charges after police gather evidence in the case.
