Space Heaters Pose Danger

Last updated on Tuesday, January 21, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana’s fire marshal is warning Hoosiers bracing for another blast of Arctic cold to exercise caution if they use space heaters or wood stoves to keep their homes warm.

State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson says space heaters should never be used near bedding, drapes or clothing. And liquid-fueled space heaters should only be refueled in well-ventilated areas when the equipment is cool.

Greeson cautions to only plug electric space heaters into outlets with sufficient capacity and never into an extension cord. Space heaters should also be turned off each night to prevent them from sparking fires if they're knocked over in the dark.

Greeson says only dry seasoned wood should be used in wood stoves and fireplaces, and fireplaces should have a screen to prevent sparks from escaping the hearth.
