(UNDATED) - Small towns across Indiana are fighting for their survival.
Purdue Extension Director Jason Henderson says the limping economy is taking a toll on parts of rural Indiana. He cites shrinking employment, residents leaving for greater opportunities in cities and globalization as reasons.
A Purdue University report says many small towns across the state have empty storefronts. However, Henderson says many communities are figuring out how to stimulate their economies and improve amenities.
Purdue University has produced an online series called, "Giving New Life to Indiana," that examines the plight of some rural communities and the rush to boost opportunities.
Ultimately, Henderson says small towns must become entrepreneurial and take more risks.
