Purdue University Shooting Suspect Charged With Murder

Last updated on Friday, January 24, 2014

(WEST LAFAYETTE) - The suspect in the shooting at Purdue University has been formally charged with murder, and a magistrate entered a not guilty plea for him.

Cody Cousins, 23, is accused of killing another Purdue student, Andrew Boldt, 21, just after noon on Tuesday. The plea was entered during Cousins's initial hearing in the courtroom of the Tippecanoe County Courthouse. He will remain in jail with no bond set, and the judge set a tentative trial date for April.

Court documents say Boldt was shot and stabbed inside a basement classroom at Purdue's Electrical Engineering Building. Police recovered a gun, a knife and several shell casings from the scene. The probable cause affidavit says several people witnessed the murder, and that surveillance video shows Cousins inside the building.

Cousins was arrested after a West Lafayette police officer saw him sitting on the ground outside the Electrical Engineering Building. The court documents say Cousins had his hands behind his head

Cousins and Boldt were both seniors at Purdue and both were teaching assistants to the same professor in the College of Engineering.
