(WABASH VALLEY) - If you use propane as your heating source you may want to turn down your thermostat.
A propane shortage effecting millions across the Midwest has hit the Wabash Valley. Companies are struggling to get the fuel as the demand continues to increase. While they are able to heat homes right now, suppliers such as Ceres Solutions in Terre Haute are not sure how long that will last.
They usually drive 60 miles to get propane and are now driving up to 800 miles.
As a result, prices are skyrocketing up to $5 a gallon. While frigid temperatures are partly to blame, it's not the only cause of the shortage.
"Folks may not realize the exports have really grown in the last two years in propane," said Ceres Solutions Energy Manager, Joe Miner. "Now there's export facilities in the Gulf. It's really become a worldwide commodity. It's going other places if those folks will pay more for the commodity."
Milner says he does not know how long the shortage will last but he does expect prices will continue to rise.
Again he wants to remind residents to conserve what propane they do have.
