Political Parties Finding Common Ground

Last updated on Friday, January 3, 2014

(UNDATED) - Congress reconvenes next week, and House Republicans say they see a possibility of some compromise in 2014 after years of gridlock and inaction in Washington DC.

Indiana's Sixth District Representative Luke Messer says a bipartisan deal to sort out the budget not only takes that issue off the table, but shows it could be actually possible for the two sides to find common ground.

And he suggests the last few months have been "humbling" for both parties, with Republicans taking a public relations hit over the government shutdown, and Democrats damaged by the trouble-plagued rollout of the new health care law.

Messer and Fourth District Representative Todd Rokita say one likely area for common ground is immigration reform. Both agree a sweeping bill to legalize undocumented immigrants will not clear the House.
