(INDIANAPOLIS) - A bill headed for a hearing before an Indiana House committee seeks to restrict police access to motorists’ text messages or calls.
The measure was set for a Monday hearing before the House's courts and criminal code committee would prevent police from accessing cell phone data without permission if the owner is pulled over for texting and driving or another related crime.
Police would still be able to download the information if there is reason to believe the phone was used for a crime. A valid search warrant or other legal means also would give police access to the phone data.
The bill comes amid nationwide concerns about National Security Agency's access to phone data.
If passed, the bill would take effect in July.
