(INDIANAPOLIS) - No new snow is in the forecast, but the government in Indianapolis will shut down on Tuesday due to the dangerously cold temperatures.

Mayor Greg Ballard says the city-county government will be closed since wind chill values are expected to be around -30 all day on Tuesday. Only essential personnel will report to work. Ballard also says government offices will open two hours later than normal on Wednesday - the forecast high on Wednesday is for the upper teens, with less wind.

Ballard says the current travel watch for Marion County is being kept in place as a way of encouraging people to stay out of the extreme cold if possible. "We will maintain orange status for the roads based simply on the cold, though I think most of the roads are now in good shape. We want essential people on the roads only," Ballard said. IndyGo buses will operate on a normal schedule Tuesday and Wednesday.

The city-county government had already suspended trash pickup through Wednesday due to the predicted cold weather. "People will be able to put out double their normal amount of trash next week if they need to," said Ballard.
