(UNDATED) - At least one home insurer across the state says it's seeing a rise in claims due cold damage.
State Farm Spokesperson Missy Dundov says they're currently compiling the numbers. She says many of the claims they're seeing are related to frozen pipes and ice dams.
Ice dams involve ice and snow piles on roofs melting and then refreezing. She says the process causes melting water to leak into homes.
Dundov says there are some things home owners can do to prevent damage to their homes this winter.
Dundov says to help prevent freezing pipes, it's best for homeowners to keep faucets trickling, maybe wrap them in special insulation tape. She also advises homeowners to disconnect garden hoses and use a special snow rakes to remove snow from rooftops.
