(UNDATED) - Most localities across Indiana have ordinances that require home and businesses to clear away snow and ice on their property immediately following storms.
Now, the City of Indianapolis is literally taking that a few steps further... and farther.
Mayor Greg Ballard's Spokesman Marc Lotter says the city is also asking businesses and homeowners to clear mailboxes, fire hydrants and storm drains near their property.
Lotter says they're trying to prevent hydrants from freezing over and it's also in anticipation of rain that may flood drains later this week.
Lotter says although the snow removal ordinance isn't regularly enforced, it remains a serious safety issue.
