INDOT Winter Budget Nearly Depleated

Last updated on Friday, January 24, 2014

(UNDATED) - It has been a tough winter for INDOT.

Spokesman Will Wingfield says they typically spend about $33.8 million for the entire winter. However, he says they've already spent $31 million with two more months of winter still ahead.

Wingfield says the money went toward manpower, overtime, fuel, salt, equipment and other items to treat and maintain roads.

Wingfield says their snow plows have driven 4.3 million miles and dropped 265,000 tons of salt on highways this winter.

He says INDOT's maintenance budget comes from vehicle registration fees and fuel taxes at the pumps.

Wingfield says they'll have to manage their budget the best way the can for the fiscal year. The new fiscal year begins July.

He says some 2100 mechanics, drivers, clerks and managers work for INDOT. He says they're confident they'll get through winter fine.
