Family Members Charged With Human Trafficking

Last updated on Wednesday, January 22, 2014

(JOHNSON CO.) - A mother and her two sons were arrested last week in Johnson County and face charges related to human trafficking.

Court documents say 29-year-old Gurdeep Dhaliwal arranged a marriage to a woman from India with her parents. The two were married in September 2012 and have lived in Greenwood.

The woman claims Gurdeep repeatedly beat her, forced her to have sex with him against her will and forced her to perform chores and tend to his mother, 65-year-old Amarjit Dhaliwal, who lived with them. The woman added she was not allowed to leave the home without Gurdeep or Amarjit being present.

Gurdeep's brother, 31-year-old Kuldeep Dhaliwal, also lived in the home and was aware of the alleged behavior.

A probable cause affidavit says Kuldeep treated his wife in the same manner. All three were arrested on January 17 and taken to the Johnson County Jail on $50,000 dollars bond.

Gurdeep Dhaliwal faces a felony charge of human trafficking. Amarjit and Kuldeep Dhaliwal each face a felony charge of aiding in human trafficking.

Johnson County Prosecutor Bradley Cooper says this is the first time human trafficking has been charged in Johnson County. He says he believes it's only the second time it's been charged in Indiana.
