(PLAINFIELD) - For the 19th consecutive year, Duke Energy Indiana’s Cayuga electric generating station will host its annual eagle viewing day on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Members of the public are invited to the station, located along State Road 63 approximately 35 miles north of Terre Haute, to view America's national symbol, the bald eagle.
"We have hosted nearly 25,000 visitors since we began this program in 1996," said Mike Wertz, Cayuga station manager. "It's a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to see these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. Several Duke Energy employees, retirees and family members will volunteer their time to assist visitors as they travel to and from the main eagle-viewing areas."
During most years, the area near Cayuga station along the Wabash River holds the state's largest population of mid-winter migratory bald eagles. When area lakes and rivers freeze over, warm water discharged from the Cayuga power plant keeps the river area near the plant free of ice, which attracts fish that the eagles hunt and eat.
In addition, the American Eagle Federation will be on hand to present the ever-popular "Birds of Prey" program at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The program features several live species of birds, including the golden eagle and the bald eagle.
Eagle viewers should dress warmly and may want to bring their cameras, binoculars and spotting scopes. In the event of bad weather, no backup day is planned.
Meanwhile, Duke Energy is sponsoring the "Birds of Prey" program at four western Indiana schools to give students a chance to see and hear these wild birds in person and up close. The schools are:
* Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary School, West Terre Haute, Thursday, Jan. 23, 9:30 a.m.
* South Vermillion Middle School, Clinton, Thursday, Jan. 23, 1:30 p.m.
* Fuqua Elementary School, Terre Haute, Friday, Jan. 24, 9:15 a.m.
* Farrington Grove Elementary School, Terre Haute, Friday, Jan. 24, 1:15 p.m.
Duke Energy Indiana's operations provide approximately 7,500 megawatts of owned electric capacity to approximately 790,000 customers, making it the state's largest electric supplier.
