(UNDATED) - Duke Energy has resolved more than 50,000 power outages related to this week’s winter storm and extreme cold temperatures. Approximately 3,100 are out of service statewide as 7 a.m.
Customers without service urged to take precautions, find shelter from extreme temperatures
Included in those numbers are 5,000-6,000 Fishers customers who lost power Monday evening. Approximately 1,700 remain out of service in the area as of Tuesday morning. Crews will work throughout the day to resolve issues there, including numerous problems with transformers and underground power systems. Estimated time for completing power restoration in that area is approximately 4 p.m. Tuesday.
"As we have resolved outages from this week's severe weather, the challenge has been battling new problems that have developed," said Russ Atkins, Duke Energy Midwest vice president of engineering. "In areas such as Fishers the combination of extreme temperatures and high demand has caused some equipment failures, including infrastructure that is underground which can take longer to repair. We urge anyone without power to take precautions because of the extremely low temperatures, including finding temporary shelter if necessary."
Monday evening Fishers opened a shelter at Fall Creek Intermediate School on Olio Road for area residents without power.
Terre Haute and Martinsville are two of the other primary areas with power outages. Power restoration should be substantially complete by noon Tuesday in Martinsville. Duke is now estimating 6 p.m. Tuesday to complete restoration in Terre Haute.
Safety remains critically important during restoration efforts. Duke Energy is cautioning customers to avoid downed power lines as they could be energized and dangerous. Anyone without service should report power outages as well as downed power lines by calling 1-800-343-3525.
If someone needs shelter, they should contact their local emergency management agency for shelter information.
