Dubois County Couple Recieves $900 Water Bill

Last updated on Wednesday, January 29, 2014

(DUBOIS CO.) - An elderly Huntingburg couple was shocked to see their latest water bill which was hundreds of dollars.

Henry and Debbie Ford, a couple who lives in rural Huntingburg, mistakenly received a $900 water bill.

Water Utility Superintendent Todd Williams says a water service line burst beneath the Fords' home. Since temperatures have been so low lately, Williams says the water froze underground and the leak couldn't be detected from the surface.

When the Fords got their bill for the month of December, it showed they had used over 100,000 gallons of water. After a review, the Huntingburg Common Council decided to forgive $800 of the bill and any excess that might show up on future bills.
"It's hard to hand someone over, in these difficult times, to hand them a bill and say, 'Hey, you can set this up on payments. Hope it works out for you.' You know? It gave us an opportunity to go in and do what was right," Williams said.

As a result of the Ford's situation, the City of Huntingburg is now working on a forgiveness procedure for excessively high utility bills.
