Child Returned To Mother Following Carjacking

Last updated on Friday, January 17, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A one-year-old girl is back with her mother after her mother’s car was stolen Thursday night with the girl still inside. Indianapolis police Lt. Chris Bailey says officers were called around 6:00 p.m.

The mother told officers she was clearing snow from her driveway when her neighbor came over and asked to use her cell phone. The mother let the man, 32-year-old Donald Nixon, use her phone and let him sit in the passenger seat of the car to stay warm.

The mother says Nixon made a couple of calls and gave her the phone back. He then moved to the driver's seat and took off with her one-year-old daughter sleeping in the backseat. The girl was found about two hours later at an apartment complex lobby in the 1300 block of North Delaware Street.

Lt. Bailey says Nixon apparently dropped her off and someone inside the lobby called 911. The girl was reunited with her mother a short time later.

Police are still searching for Nixon and the stolen car. Nixon is described as a black male, 5'8", 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a maroon and yellow jacket with multi-colored sweatpants and a dark colored stocking cap.

Detectives located Nixon's father who said Nixon had just been released from the Wabash Mental Facility a week ago. Nixon was at the facility for "issues stemming from diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia."

The car is a 2001 tan Buick Century with Indiana license plate number 995AOP.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the car or Nixon is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
