Man Sentenced To 40 Years In Connection With Infant's Death

Last updated on Wednesday, December 18, 2013

(VALPARAISO) - An Indiana man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s infant son.

A Porter County jury had convicted 25-year-old Benjamin Willis II last month of charges of neglect of a dependent and battery in Keagan Fishel's March 2012 death.

Willis, who was sentenced Monday, has denied injuring the youngster.

Court documents say the 7-month-old boy died of blunt force trauma to the head after suffering multiple skull fractures and hemorrhages resulting from "violent and extremely forceful" action.

The Times of Munster reports that prosecutors said Willis caused the injuries a few days prior to the child's death.

The child's mother, Sasha Sabates, teared up as she told the court, "My sweet baby boy did not deserve this."
