Man Arrested After Being Shot By Guard During Armored Car Robbery

Last updated on Tuesday, December 24, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis police say a man who tried to rob an armored car is in custody after being shot by a guard and captured by bystanders.

Officer Christopher Wilburn says the incident occurred Sunday afternoon just before 5:00 pm just outside a Walmart on the city's far south side, in the 7200 block of US 31. He says a man wearing body armor shot pepper spray at a Brinks truck guard and tried to take a money bag.

Wilburn says the guard then shot the suspect several times with his gun. The suspect tried to flee on foot but was captured by an off-duty police officer and another bystander.

Wilburn says the suspect was transported to a hospital in serious condition. It's not clear how many times the suspect was shot or where on his body he was hit.

Officers removed the body armor that the suspect was wearing during the attempted robbery.
