Last updated on Tuesday, December 24, 2013

(UNDATED) - Knox and Sullivan Counties have been awarded a $110,000 grant through the department of Family and Social Services Administration to tackle underage drinking and drug abuse.

The group Communities That Care will administer the grant which will provide funding to educate and help students from taking that first step towards substance abuse.

Lynne Rump a member of the task force says they've identified those students transitioning from 8th to 9th grade as the most vulnerable group.

Rump says with funding provided by the grant they have developed a four step program which includes a class on tobacco use for all 8th graders which will begin next year.

The grant provided funding to hire people to work with students in all three Knox and Sullivan County Public School Corporations.
