(BARTHOLOMEW CO.) - A Bartholomew County Jail inmate died after going through medical distress in his cell early Saturday morning.
Major Todd Noblitt says that, around 3:20 a.m., an ambulance was called to the jail after officials saw 46-year-old Dennis W. Simpson, of Columbus, roll onto the floor from his bunk with signs of labored breathing.
Shortly thereafter, Simpson went into cardiac arrest.
Nobiltt says CPR was performed by jail staff on Simpson until he could be taken to Columbus Regional Hospital. Simpson was pronounced dead at the hospital around 4 a.m.
An inmate that was housed with Simpson told investigators that he was not aware that Simpson was experiencing any medical issues until officers entered the cell.
Nobiltt says as is customary with any jail death, the Bartholomew County Death Investigation Team was activated. There is no evidence of foul-play, but a thorough investigation is being conducted.
Sheriff Mark Gorbett has requested that the Columbus Police Department take the lead in the investigation.
Simpson was booked into the jail on Nov. 29 on a Superior Court II commitment. He was scheduled to be released Monday.
