(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Zoo's latest addition, a baby giraffe, will make his debut in the spring.

Three-year-old Majani was born in California and came to the Indianapolis Zoo in mid-October. Majani was placed under a 30-day quarantine, which is standard procedure for new animals. Now, Majani is becoming acquainted with the rest of the herd.

Majani, who was named for the Swahili word meaning "grass," joins the zoo's herd that includes two females, Takasa and Ajabusana.

Majani is more than 12 feet tall at the age of 3. Zoo officials say male reticulated giraffes can reach 15 to 18 feet tall, roughly 3 feet taller than females.

Zookeepers describe Majani to be very shy, but they said they hope his personality will warm up during the next few months.
