(INDIANAPOLIS) - There have been no cases of flu in Marion County so far this year, but the Health Department says that is not necessarily an indicator of the type of flu season we will have.
"Most of the time, we see the majority of cases in February, so that's kind of what we are expecting," said Dr. Christiane Hadi, the department's Medical Director for Infectious Diseases after the Marion County Influenza Summit.
Hadi says you can never judge a flu season by any particular month. "Last year, we had an early season. This year, we have seen no cases in November, so we are expecting it to pick up very soon."
That's not to say that absolutely no one in the county has the flu. "Only deaths from influenza are reportable diseases, so we can't depend on labs to report cases to us until we get additional information," Hadi said.
Flu season typically runs from October through March, and Hadi says there is still plenty of time to get a flu shot. "The shot is recommended for every person who doesn't have (an egg allergy) who is six months or older."
