Businesses Scramble To Increase 2013 Profits

Last updated on Tuesday, December 31, 2013

(UNDATED) - A Purdue University analyst says retailers still have until the end of January to make up for lackluster holiday sales.

Richard Feinberg says gift cards were the number one gift again this year. He says retailers can't account for gift card sales until they're actually used. Feinberg says most holiday gift cards are used in January.

Feinberg says retailers may see a two to three percent increase in holiday sales over 2012.

Some reports show online sales this year rose by 11 percent, fueled by mobile devices.

Still, Feinberg says after-Christmas sales through January will tell the true tale about how retailers did in 2013.
