Board Votes To Close School

Last updated on Wednesday, December 4, 2013

(FARMERSBURG) - A small town in southwestern Indiana will see both its high school and elementary school shut down.

The Northeast Sullivan School Board voted 3-2 Monday night to close the 172-student Union Junior-Senior High School in the town of Dugger. The district will also close Dugger Elementary.

The Tribune-Star reports supporters of the schools began leaving the meeting before the votes were finished, with some shouting angry comments at board members.

District Superintendent Mark Baker says the board had no other choice because of declining enrollment and revenue. The district's remaining high school is the 500-student North Central Junior-Senior High near Farmersburg.

Greg Ellis of the group Save UHS tells the Sullivan Daily Times the legal action is being considered.
