(INDIANAPOLIS) - A lawsuit filed by Indiana’s largest beer distributor challenges liquor laws that date from the days of Prohibition.
Monarch Beverage Co.'s lawsuit against the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission alleges that a state law barring alcohol wholesalers from supplying both beer and liquor violates the U.S. Constitution.
The Indianapolis Business Journal reports lawmakers have been reluctant to change Indiana's alcohol laws despite several lawsuits.
Monarch has tried unsuccessfully the last four legislative sessions to advance a bill supporting its position. Indiana Legislative Insight publisher Ed Feigenbaum says that isn't likely to change in next year's short legislative session.
Liquor distributors say a change to the laws would allow Monarch to create a monopoly.
