Terre Haute Man Sentenced To 24-Years For Child Neglect

Last updated on Friday, November 8, 2013

(TERRE HAUTE) - A western Indiana man has received a 24-year prison sentence for confining three of his adopted children to their bedroom for weeks, depriving them of food, water and bathroom access.

40-year-old Larry Russell of Terre Haute was sentenced Wednesday by Vigo Superior Court Judge John Roach, who told Russell he had treated the three boys "like animals."

Russell pleaded guilty to neglect and criminal confinement charges for the boys' confinement. The Tribune-Star reports the boys had created holes and tunnels so they could escape from their room to get food, water and access to the bathroom.

Four adopted children lived with Russell and his wife, Nikki, along with their own biological child.

Nikki Russell is scheduled to enter a guilty plea Nov. 19 in the case.
