(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana is shifting some of its federal welfare dollars into a program that helps families needing child care.
The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration says it would move an additional $23 million from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to the Child Care Development Fund.
Along with an earlier transfer of $39 million, FSSA has moved $62 million, or 30 percent of its total TANF funding, to the child care program, the maximum allowed under federal law.
TANF provides cash assistance, job preparation and other services to needy families with children under age 18.
FSSA says the Child Care Development Fund currently serves more than 40,000 children from 21,000 Indiana families. It says 4,800 children are on its CCDF waiting list.
