(CARMEL) - The usually festive atmosphere of a high school football game was broken in Carmel Friday night after two men suffered unrelated health emergencies, one fatal.
RTV6 reports, Carmel High School officials released a statement thanking first responders and St.Vincent Sports Performance trainers and doctors who "saved the life" of referee Joe Calderazzo after he collapsed on the field mid-game.
"Their actions were heroic and performed under extreme pressure with thousands of people watching their every move," the statement read.
In an unrelated incident, the father of Carmel running back Shakir Paschall suffered a medical emergency at the game and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"The Greyhound family is saddened by the loss of life suffered by the Paschall family," said school officials. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, staff, and students affected by this tragedy."
Shakir Paschall ended up scoring the final touchdown in the victory against Penn High School, sending the Greyhounds to the Class 6A state title game against Warren Central.
