Panel Of Lawmakers Look At State's High Rate Of Teen Sexual Assaults

Last updated on Friday, November 1, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A panel of Indiana lawmakers is set to examine the state’s high rate of teen sexual assaults amid a call for better protections for children.

Democratic State Rep. Christina Hale said Wednesday that lawmakers need to look at ways to better protect children against violent sex crimes. She planned to testify before the Criminal Law and Sentencing Policy Study Committee with a group of sexual assault experts Thursday.

The Centers for Disease Control reports that 17.3 percent of Indiana girls between grades 9 and 12 have reported being raped. That's compared to a national average of 10.5 percent.
