National Guard Plan To Honor Seven Fallen Guardsman

(VALPARAISO) - The Indiana National Guard plans to honor seven fallen guardsman with a ceremony at Valparaiso University.

An unveiling of seven personalized shadow boxes dedicated to honoring the memories and sacrifices of the guardsmen is scheduled for Sunday.

Twenty-one-year-old Sgt. Brian Leonhardt of Merrillville; 20-year-old Spc. Christopher Patterson, 20, a Valparaiso University student from Aurora, Ill.; and 44-year-old Spc. Robert Tauteris Jr of Hamlet were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb. Thirty-two-year-old Staff Sgt. Jonathan Metzger of Indianapolis also was killed by the roadside bomb.

Twenty-one-year-old Spc. Sergio E. Perez of Schererville, and 20-year-old Spc. Nicholas Taylor of Berne were killed during an attack. Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Chavez died in 2008 from an illness contracted at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., during specialized combat engineer leader training.
