Former Employee Of North Spencer Co. School Arrested For Stealing $100K From School

Last updated on Thursday, November 21, 2013

(SPENCER CO) - A former employee of the North Spencer County School system is accused of stealing more than $100,000 from the school.

WFIE reports, Melissa Isaacs use to work as the extra curricular treasurer at Heritage Hills High School and Middle School. She was let go back in February. Now, it seems she owes both the school system and the state of Indiana $106,000.

Superintendent Dan Scherry says the school system is audited every two years and that this audit alleges Isaacs failed to deposit over $45,000 in textbook rental fees, over $1,000 in athletics ticket sales and payments for letter jackets, over $1,500 in parking fees, and nearly $8,000 in school lunch payments over the past six years.

The audit also alleges Isaacs took several thousand dollars from school system funds without authorization. The audit claims the school system is owed a total of $83,555 and that the state is owed $34,134 in audit costs.

Scherry says the state attorney general is currently reviewing the audit, and if the investigation moves forward, the Spencer County Prosecutor's Office will determine any charges against Isaacs.
"I suspect there'll be some sort of a finding here in the next week or so, to determine whether or not they're going to seek criminal charges or not," Scherry said.

Right now, Isaacs doesn't face any formal charges, as this investigation is still ongoing.
