Last updated on Tuesday, November 5, 2013

(GARY) - A northwestern Indiana fire official says a house fire in Gary that killed a 71-year-old woman also injured a child and two other people.

The Lake County Coroner's office says Essie Hill was pronounced dead at a local hospital following Sunday's fire. An autopsy to determine how she died was scheduled for Monday.

Gary Deputy Fire Chief Mark Jones tells The Times of Munster that a 9-year-old child and another person were hospitalized with injuries following the fire. He says a third person in the home also suffered heat and smoke-related injuries.

Jones says the fire is believed to be accidental, but its cause remains under investigation.
