Corrections Officer Remains in Critical Condition

Last updated on Friday, November 8, 2013

(GREENSBURG) - A Decatur County Corrections Officer remains hospitalized with serious head injuries after a crash early Monday morning.

The Greensburg Daily News is reporting that 21-year-old Luke Schmidt, of Greensburg, remains in intensive care.

The paper reports that Schmidt was traveling southbound on Highway 421 near County Road 200 South in a pickup truck when it drifted off the left side of road and struck three large trees. Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen told the paper that Schmidt hit the third tree head-on.

Allen went on to say that no one witnessed the crash, but evidence points to Schmidt having fell asleep at the wheel. He estimates that the crash took place around 12:30 a.m., some 30 minutes before it was discovered. However, the sheriff added that he requested the Indiana State Police conduct their own investigation.
