(COLUMBUS) - Increasing concern about concussions has sparked a new partnership between a school district and a hospital in southern Indiana.
The three-year contract between the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. and Columbus Regional Health puts two full-time athletic trainers into Columbus North and East high schools at the hospital's expense. The contract also provides services to two middle schools.
The Republic reports the athletes work with trainers to reduce the risk of injury. Columbus Regional puts an ambulance on standby for varsity football games and gets an inside track on referrals when athletes need more extensive medical attention or rehabilitation.
Other schools have similar partnerships. Franklin Community High School partners with Johnson Memorial Hospital in Johnson County.
