Romantic Date Turns Into Gun-Toting Assailants

Last updated on Wednesday, October 9, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis man is recovering Tuesday morning after he met someone online and set up what he thought was going to be a nice evening — until he was greeted by gun-toting assailants.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) said just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, officers were sent to the 1700 block of Senate Boulevard (Methodist Hospital) on a report of someone with a gunshot wound.

Officers spoke with the victim, Steven Brown, 34, of Indianapolis. IMPD said Brown told them he had been talking to someone he believed to be a woman named "Desire" in an online chat room called "Chocolate City." Brown said the woman had asked him to meet her in the 500 block of Tecumseh next to a gray car.

Brown told officers he had gone to that spot, pulled up to a gray vehicle and hit his horn while facing south on Tecumseh. But then, Brown said, two people opened his driver and passenger doors. Brown said the man opening his driver's side door was a young black man with a gray hoodie, but he was unable to catch a good look at the person who opened the passenger-side door.

Brown said the man who opened his door grabbed his face and told him to get out of the car, and that he then heard a shot come from the passenger side of his car. That's when Brown said he floored the gas and drove off, both doors slamming shut.

Police said Brown drove himself to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his right forearm. The shot had gone all the way through his arm.

There is no word from police as to whether they have any suspects in mind.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call IMPD at 317-327-3811. Or you may remain anonymous with your tip by calling Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
