Fire At Goshen Animal Bedding Plant Rekindles Debate About Safety

Last updated on Thursday, October 31, 2013

(GOSHEN) - A fire at an Elkhart County animal bedding plant has rekindled a debate about safety at wood grinding operations.

The fire destroyed the main structure at Martin Animal Bedding and has caused some residents to push for locating such businesses in rural areas where there's less potential for harm to others.

Goshen resident Wayne Stutsman tells The Elkhart Truth he led efforts against VIM Recycling following a 2007 dust explosion there that killed one man and injured another. He says fires at wood grinding operations are inevitable and wants to see such businesses located away from neighbors.

Investigators are looking at spontaneous combustion within the wood pile as a possible cause of the Martin Animal Bedding fire.
