(SUMMITTVILLE) - The discovery of more than 100 dead animals on a central Indiana farm this spring has prompted Madison County officials to toughen their animal protection laws.
Commissioners this week approved a new law that defines the responsibilities of animal owners and caregivers to provide food, water and shelter. It also defines cruelty, abuse, neglect and abandonment of animals and makes it illegal to be involved in events at which animals are fighting.
Penalties can run as high as $500 for those convicted.
The Herald Bulletin reports the changes stem from the discovery in April of more than 100 carcasses on a farm belonging to Daniel and Carrie Ault near Summitville. Authorities also discovered dozens of malnourished animals that one investigator described as walking skeletons.
