Last updated on Tuesday, October 8, 2013

(HOUSTON) - Dario Franchitti is thanking fans for their thoughts as he recovers from a frightening crash Sunday afternoon

Franchitti made contact with Takuma Sato on the final lap of the Grand Prix of Houston, catapulting into the catch fence on the outside of the track. He suffered a concussion, two spinal fractures and a broken right ankle in the crash.

He had surgery Sunday night to stabilize the fractured ankle.

"Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes.@ They mean a lot to me. @I would also like to send my best to all the fans involved in the accident and hope that everyone is alright," Franchitti said.

More than a dozen fans were reportedly injured by debris from Franchitti's car that flew into the grandstand during the crash. Indianapolis 500 champion Tony Kanaan tweeted a picture Monday of him and fellow driver Scott Dixon visiting a fan who was injured in the crash.

Franchitti will remain in Houston for a few more days, before returning to Indianapolis for further evaluation.
