(BALTIMORE) - Best-selling author Tom Clancy has died.

Clancy died in a Baltimore hospital Tuesday evening, according to a statement released by his publisher. He was 66.

The author is best known for his military thrillers that turned into box office gold. His 1984 novel "The Hunt for Red October" made him a favorite storyteller, especially among the military.

That movie was brought to life on the silver screen in 1990 by Sean Connery and Harrison Ford.

Clancy penned 17 number one best-selling novels during his career. His latest book, a techno-thriller "Command Authority" is expected to hit bookshelves on December 3.

No cause of death was given.
