(VIGO COUNTY) - Indiana State Police and Terre Haute City emergency agencies responded to a two-vehicle accident that injured two highway workers Thursday just before 9 a.m.
Officials report Stephen C. Harrold, 63 of West Terre Haute, was driving a red, 2005 Toyota truck near the seven mile marker on Interstate 70 when he entered a closed lane that was under construction.
Harrold struck two construction barrels, traveled nearly 1,548 feet before crashing into a gray, 1999 Ford parked truck. Two Wabash Valley Asphalt employees were inside the parked truck at the time of the accident.
The Ford truck, owned by Wabash Valley Asphalt, was driven by John M. Gabbard, 30 of Terre Haute. The passenger was Michael K. Crossley, 34 of Clinton.
A preliminary investigation showed Harrold had a Blood Alcohol Content of .54 percent.
Both the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the construction companies at the scene had signage and electronic boards in place at the time of the crash.
Harrold was medically cleared from a local hospital and then taken to the Vigo County Jail. He faces two possible charges of injury to a highway worker, driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated (above .15 percent).
Crossley was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital and later released while Gabbard sought medical treatment on his own.
