SWAT Officers Called After Man Barricaded Himself In Indy Apartment

Last updated on Friday, September 27, 2013

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Metro Police SWAT officers responded to a report of a barricaded person near downtown Wednesday night. Shortly after 2:20 a.m. Thursday, police had the 41-year-old man in custody.

The man was barricaded in his mother's apartment at 555 Massachusetts Avenue. A SWAT commander said the man had come to visit his mother, who told police he suffers from undiagnosed mental issues.

She said she asked her son to leave, but he refused and fired one of his guns out her patio window. She left and called police.

Police described the gun he fired as a handgun, and did not believe the shots were fired onto Massachusetts Avenue.

Adjacent apartments were evacuated by police. Police negotiators attempted to make contact with the man, but were unsuccessful.

Police deployed several gas canisters to attempt to draw the man out. When those failed, they used flash-bang grenades. The man then surrendered peacefully.

Officers found several weapons in the apartment, but said the man did not attempt to use them against police.

The man was taken to Wishard Hospital for evaluation.

There is no word on what charges he may face.
