(MIAMI CO.) - A standoff at Grissom Air Force Reserve Base ended with one man in custody early Friday, Indiana State Police said.
The standoff began just before 8 p.m. Thursday night when Miami County Sheriff's Department officers responded to a 911 call about a suspicious man carrying a briefcase and kneeling in prayer on Hoosier Boulevard.
When police arrived at the scene the found the suspect, identified at George J. Doss, 47, of Kokomo, standing next to a small suitcase. Police said Doss was uncooperative and told officers that they were in a red zone. When Indiana State Police officers were called to the scene, a perimeter was set up and hostage crisis negotiations were called to assist the officers.
As ISP tried to negotiate with Doss, police said he continued to ignore their commands. A robot was brought in to remove the suitcase from the scene. Just before 2:30 a.m. negotiators were able to take Doss into custody without incident.
No weapons or explosives were found inside the suitcase and Doss was not armed, police said.
Although Doss was not injured, he was taken to Dukes Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
The Miami County Prosecutor's Office has considered filing disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement charges against Doss.
