(INDIANAPOLIS) - Police continue to investigate after a five-year-old boy was shot in the back after what police call a "senseless" act of violence.

As of Saturday afternoon, the five-year-old was listed in good condition at Riley Hospital for Children.

"Around 10, we heard shots. Not sure how many. There were a lot. They were loud," said neighbor Lawanna Turner.

Lawanna Turner was there Friday night when police say shots were fired across the street on Brentwood Avenue. Those bullets traveled through traffic on 42nd street, and hit a five-year-old boy in the back.

The gunfire also hit Turner's home and almost hit her 11-year-old daughter.

"Oh, my daughter's room. It didn't go all the way through but she was in there. That's truly a blessing," said Turner.

The neighbor, like police, said what happened in her east side neighborhood was "senseless".

Police believe two people were firing the weapons in a busy neighborhood with children.

"It's terrible that you cannot be safe anywhere," said Turner.

Turner's car was also damaged by a stray bullet. This east side mother of four says enough is enough: "I just wished these people would take into consideration other people's lives. They may not care about their lives but other people's lives are at stake. It is not right."

Detectives have identified a person of interest after finding a gun nearby the scene. Investigators will determine if charges will be filed.
