(INDIANAPOLIS) - One ramp that was shut down as part of Indiana Department of Transportation's South Split project reopened to traffic Wednesday morning.

The ramp that had been shut down connects Interstate 70 east with I-65 south. For the last two weeks, drivers had to travel on temporary pavement at 30 mph through the area as construction crews worked to lower the road that runs under the Morris Street Bridge.

The 59-day project will lower the roads under bridges in seven areas of the South Split to reduce the number of semis that hit the overpasses.
"It's our belief that this project will reduce the probability of the bridge strikes and traffic crashes caused by debris falling into the roadway," said INDOT Deputy Commissioner Jay Wasson.

The South Split construction project is expected to be finished by early November.
