(EVANSVILLE,) - A man charged with burglary resulting in bodily injury, criminal confinement and theft in a home invasion that left him seriously injured is asking for his trial to be moved because of extensive pretrial media coverage.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports attorney Glenn Grampp filed the motion Wednesday in Vanderburgh Circuit Court on behalf of 23-year-old Jeton Hall.
The case has received a lot of attention because the victim of the home invasion, Evansville businessman Ira Beumer, is charged with murder because he is accused of ramming his truck into a car full of men suspected of robbing his house, killing one of them and injuring Hall.
Judge David Kiely has approved delaying the trial until Dec. 9.
The robbery and deadly accident happened in Feburary 19th in Vanderburgh County. It started as a home invasion on Big Cynthiana Road and ended in a crash that killed one of the suspects.
In February of 2012 Ira Beumer had arrived home around 2:30am when men wearing ski masks and brandishing guns forced him into his home. They robbed him of money and fire arms before fleeing by car in Vanderburgh County, Indiana.
Inside the home was Beumer's young daughter and his wife was due home shortly. He cooperated fully and was not injured but after the criminals fled he was not immediately able to locate his daughter. Beumer's wife had arrived home but noticed something wasn't right and parked on an access road to stay out of sight. Fearing that his daughter may have been kidnapped, Beumer raced past his wife yelling for her to call the police and jumped into his truck to give chase to the robbers.
There are reports that the robbers lost control of their car on the county road due to the high speed and low visibility and Beumer was following too closely to avoid hitting the vehicle. Another report says Beumer intentionally rear ended the vehicle to stop them. The result of the accident was the death of one of the robbers and injury to another.
There were four men involved in the home invasion robbery. Two others were subsequently arrested about a mile from the location of the robbery. Thankfully, Beumer's daughter had not been taken and was at home, unharmed.
On May 18, 2012, Beumer was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery. He is being held without bond. Charges stem from the accident involving the robbers as they were fleeing.
