(PUTNAM COUNTY) - Police said an early morning exchange with two travelers on an Indiana interstate went from a traffic stop to an arrest over drugs and fraudulent documents.
Indiana State Police said that just before 1 a.m. Monday, a trooper was patrolling Interstate 70 near the Clay/Putnam county line when he spotted a black passenger car traveling east at 81 miles per hour in a 70 mile-per-hour zone. The trooper said the car also made lane changes without signaling.
The trooper stopped the car in Putnam County near mile marker 29, several miles east of the State Road 59 exit. ISP said the trooper detected multiple inconsistencies with information given by the driver and passenger of the car. That's when a Clay County sheriff's deputy and his K-9 partner, "Dayk," joined the investigation.
ISP said the K-9 "alerted" to the vehicle and a subsequent search revealed traces of marijuana, eight hydrocodone pills, 21 counterfeit traveler's checks, several clothing and home improvement items recently bought with the fake traveler's checks and one false driver's license from the state of Texas with the driver's photo - but with a different name.
The trooper arrested both of the car's inhabitants and took them to the Putnam County Jail.
The driver, Barrington Howell, 26, of Brooklyn, New York, was charged with theft, production of a counterfeit I.D., counterfeiting and fraud - all Class D felonies.
The passenger, Quita Kellum, 27, of Brooklyn, New York, was charged with theft, counterfeiting, fraud and possession of a controlled substance - also all Class D felonies.
