Indiana National Guardsman Dies In Afghanistan

(AFGHANISTAN) - The Indiana National Guard confirms that a local Guardsman has died in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Randall R. Lane of Indianapolis, died of a non-combat related illness at Camp Phoenix in Kabul on September 13. Lane was 43 years old.

Lane deployed in January of this year as a member of the 1438th Transportation Company out of Franklin, IN. He served as a Motor Transport Operator providing security for convoys.

"Karen and I offer our prayers for comfort and strength to the wife and family of Staff Sgt. Randall Lane," stated Pence. "I am grateful for men like Staff Sgt. Lane who sacrifice so that others may enjoy the blessings of liberty and freedom."

"I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Staff Sgt. Lane, who lost his life while serving his nation," said Umbarger. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones."
