House Passes Bill To Delay Health Care Subsidies

Last updated on Friday, September 13, 2013

(WASHINGTON DC) - The House has passed another bill opposing President Barack Obama’s health care law.

The bill would ban new subsidies to help buy health insurance until the Obama administration creates a new verification system to ensure they only go to those who are eligible.

The bill has no chance in the Democrat-controlled Senate. Democrats say it would unnecessarily delay subsidies set to start next year.

Under the law, many low- and middle-income families that don't get health insurance through work will be able to get subsidies to help buy insurance through state-based exchanges. Eligibility is based on income.

Republicans say there aren't enough safeguards to prevent fraud. Democrats say income information will be checked against tax, Social Security and credit records.
