(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue University forestry experts are urging Indiana property owners with walnut trees to scout those trees for signs of a deadly fungus that’s been discovered in southwestern Ohio.
No cases of the fungus known as thousand cankers disease have been reported in Indiana. But the executive director of two Purdue-based forestry and walnut research groups says property owners should be vigilant in scouting for signs of the disease in their walnut trees.
Thousand cankers disease has no known treatment. It's spread by the walnut twig beetle and causes dead plant tissue called cankers that can block the movement of water and nutrients through trees, killing them.
Ohio authorities have confirmed the disease in trees near Cincinnati about 15 to 25 miles east of southeastern Indiana's Dearborn County.
